As nurses, we will have the opportunity to engage in the most rewarding profession of helping others heal. To provide the best care we will need incredible empathy skills. Sometimes the emotional strain of this profession may lead to empathy desensitization. Burnout “is defined as emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress” (Meded Web 2010). In this presentation we will demonstrate that empathy burnout is a risk for healthcare workers, strong empathetic skills are good for nurses and patients, and finally, like muscle empathy can be trained.

Empathy burnout is a tough topic to address, good job guys! Burnout influences our care and can influence our personal lives as well. We have to balance ourselves so that we don’t personally invest to the point that it could lead to even further burnout. We need to remain emotionally stable in order to be the best future nurses we can be! When we don’t care (or love) ourselves we can’t show care for others to the best of our ability. Be friends with yourself, to be a friend to others! This involves self-care and not taking work home (which can be tough). And whoever reads this remember to take care of yourself today 😊

Very great job on covering the empathetic balance. It is so true that a lack of self-compassion and self-love can halt us from showing compassion towards other individuals.

Great job everyone on covering the importance of empathy burnout and how it influences nurses careers in the work place and their own personal lives, it is definitely a topic that needs to be addressed more in the nursing profession.

This was an excellent piece of work. We often forget to empathize with ourselves as we get worked up throughout our practice. It is very important to perform self care first before we show empathy to our patients because they require a full commitment from us.

Excellent work covering the topic of empathy burnout and its effects on nurses’ personal life and their work lives. It is very important to maintain an ideal balance between work and daily life in order to prevent burnout. This is a key investment for all future nurses in order to provide safe and empathic care to all patients of varying cultures and ethnicities.

Great job! I like how you guys incorporated exercises and examples in your presentation it really helped me get a better understanding on how having empathy can positively impact our nursing experience. Also nice job explaining how empathy burnout can negatively impact our interactions with patients and that its important to take care of ourselves to ensure the best possible patient care. Overall, great presentation!

burnout is such a scary concept that many of us are thinking of as we progress in our path in nursing. you incorporated many important concepts and ideas for how to make the best out of your empathy skills as a nurse. it makes sense that burnout doesn’t just affect the nurse but those around them aswell. well done!!

We like how you guys brought up the topic of empathy burnout because it is an important topic. Nurses are supposed to always be empathetic but it can cause stress and burnout. This video is well organized and put together. Great job
