We have found ourselves in a different world due to the current global pandemic (COVID-19). Precautions such as: standing six feet apart, wearing a mask when in public, and emphasizing the use of telemedicine, have been implemented in an attempt to control the spread of the virus. These regulations have affected and strained interpersonal communication by limiting nonverbal cues, physical gestures, and facial expressions. As first-year nursing students, we recognize that perceiving and conveying empathy is a critical skill in order to be effective professionals in practice. As future front line health care workers, we probed past research and used personal reflection in an attempt to gain insight on how pandemic restrictions have shaped interpersonal communication of empathy.

So true, masks hide our emotions and make it difficult to read non-verbal communication. Not to mention the “human connection” is getting lost through factors coming up through the pandemic. Great work team !

Definitely some weird times we are living in. With the use of masks, it can sometimes be tricky to determine the emotions of other people.

Great job! Very relevant to our “new normal” and to the profession of nursing. Great job of incorporating sources as well as personal stories.

I enjoyed the quote at the beginning about actions speaking louder than words. Your presentation expressed how our non-verbal communication has been compromised and the effects it has not only on the relationship between healthcare professionals and the patient, but also day to day life, as you explained by smiling at people while walking down the street. The suggestions you provided at the end will be useful!
Great job:)

Its so weird how covering the bottom part of your face can have a negative impact on how people interact with each other. I also like how the issue you guys address is relevant to how we are currently living. Good Job!

Definitely agree! Masks have made it difficult for us to share our emotions with each other. Interesting perspective. Well done guys!!!!

Good job guys. The masks are definitely a new normal, this is a great relevant topic. The masks have definitely made it hard to figure out what a person is feeling through their facial expressions.
